The impact of knowledge-intensive entrepreneurship on the growth and competitiveness of European traditional sectors

Kastelli I. and Caloghirou, Y., (forthcoming), “The impact of knowledge-intensive entrepreneurship on the growth and competitiveness of European traditional sectors”. In H. Hirsch-Kreinsen , I. Schwinge (eds.), Knowledge-Intensive Entrepreneurship In Low-Tech Industries, Cheltenham: Edward Elgar Publishing.

This chapter highlights the relation of knowledge intensive entrepreneurship with growth and competitiveness of European traditional sectors. We argue that knowledge intensive entrepreneurship in LMT sectors a) can contribute to overcoming competitive pressures from low-wage economies as it builds on knowledge intensive assets, promotes innovation and continuous technological upgrading and b) can create new economic value by exploiting knowledge bases “belonging” to other sectors or scientific fields with widely applicable knowledge.

Policy implications are important. Fostering applications of key enabling technologies in low tech activities and interaction between developers and users of these technologies could boost competitiveness. In addition, development of absorptive and technology management capability in these sectors could transform them in knowledge-intensive users.
