For the Greek people, these past few weeks have been an emotional rollercoaster ride. Following weariness from protracted and bitter negotiations with the Troika – the International Monetary Fund, European Central Bank and European Commission – which often threatened the cohesion of the governing coalition, came the distress of realising the severity of the new €13.5bn austerity package that was the result of these negotiations. This in turn led to escalating anxiety regarding the government’s ability to pass the package through parliament, in view of increasing desertion signs from individual MPs of one of the governing coalition parties and the collective decision of another to withhold its support for this vote.
