Aristides Hatzis

Aristides Hatzis is an Associate Professor of Law & Economics and Legal Theory at the University of Athens with a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. He completed his basic legal studies at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. He studied Sociology, Philosophy and History of Law at the graduate level at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki School of Law (LL.B., LL.M.) and Philosophy and Economic Analysis of Law at the University of Chicago Law School (LL.M., J.S.D.) In 1999, he received his doctorate on the economics of contract law, under the supervision of Judge Richard A. Posner (chair), Judge Frank Easterbrook and Prof. William Landes. He is an attorney-at-law and a member of the Thessaloniki Bar Association since 1992 and of the American Bar Association since 1994. In September 2001 he was elected a member of the steering committee of the European Association of Law & Economics where he served until 2006. In 2002 he was the local organizer of EALE’s 19th annual conference. He is a member of the Advisory Board of the Society of European Contract Law (SECOLA), the Steering Committee of the European Network for Better Regulation and the Editorial Board of the European Review of Contract Law. He is also a fellow of the European Law Institute and a member of the scientific board of the Hellenic Foundation for European & Foreign Policy (ELIAMEP). He is the recipient of several fellowships and awards and his papers have been published in such journals as the International Review of Law & Economics, European Journal of Law & Economics, Commentaries in Law & Economics, Revue de Philosophie Economique, etc. and in international collective volumes. He has refereed papers for over 15 journals and he has taught as Visiting Professor in several Greek and European universities.He is also member of many professional organizations. He is the editor of Economic Analysis of Law: A European Perspective (Edward Elgar 2013) and Norms and Values in Law & Economics (Routledge, 2013). He is currently writing a monograph with the tentative title The Right to Self-Ownership. His op-eds have been published by the New York Times, the Financial Times, the Wall Street Journal, the CNBC and other major international and Greek media.
