Athens, 9-11 May: Euro Summit Simulation — Outcomes and Evaluation

logo euro summitEuro Summit Simulation, 9-11 May – Athens 2014: the three(3)-day event, which was jointly organised by the Crisis Observatory of the Hellenic Foundation for European and Foreign Policy (ELIAMEP), the Institute of Research and Training on European Affairs (IRTEA), the Student Association for International Affairs (SAFIA), the Department of Political Science and Public Administration of the University of Athens and the Université libre de Bruxelles, concluded yesterday. Admittedly with great success -let alone when one considers that this was the first of its kind- the simulation was aimed at post-graduate students who, regardless of their fields of study and/ or nationality, wished to represent one of the 18 Eurozone Member States, along with the European Commission, the European Central Bank, the European Parliament and the President of the Euro Summit.

The agenda was set to “Growth-Jobs-Cohesion”, a most urgent and hot issue that the 23 young participants debated on with zeal, seriousness and according to the official Rules of the Procedure; on the morning of Sunday, 11 May, the “Heads of State” reached an agreement with consensus and publicised a draft statement that reflects their main ideas. A plethora of different issues emerged and led to thorough discussions, such as Eurobonds, Green Jobs and the empowerment of the European Investment Bank. Among others, the resulting document concludes that the Euro Summit “…suggests the intensification of the financial assistance provided by the European Investment Bank to R&D and Innovation programmes, through packages of loans with low interest…” and “…promotes the enhancement of employees’ education, so as to improve their professional skills and acting in a more competitive way within the Single Market”.

The debate was truly stimulating and participants sincerely engaged in all procedures. The Outstanding Participation Award went to Mr. Vasileios Giannias, who represented the Chancellor of Germany, for his excellent preparation, his negotiation skills and total contribution to the process.

On behalf of the organising team, we would like to thank everyone who helped to realise the event, to prepare and to anticipate everything with great detail and along the most stringent standards. Of course, the event could not have been possible without the active support and commitment of all participants, who really did their very best at every stage. Hopefully, this year’s Euro Summit Simulation will mark the beginning of a new, preferably annual, event that will foster European education and prepare today’s youth for the challenges that they will have to deal with as the leaders of tomorrow.
