Theodoros Rakopoulos

Dr Theodoros Rakopoulos is a social anthropologist. Before his endeavour in the discipline, he acquired titles (LLB and MA) in different fields: he studied Law at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and obtained a Master’s degree in International Relations from Goldsmiths, University of London. His PhD thesis (Anthropology, Goldsmiths, University of London, 2012), based on 18-month ethnographic fieldwork research, explores the social, political and economic relations constituted in relation to agrarian cooperatives that work land confiscated by the state from mafiosi owners in the Alto Belice valley, Sicily. The thesis argues that the state’s intervention entailed the promotion of values (‘legality’) and relationships antithetical to those that obtained locally. Since April 2013, Theodoros works as a postdoctoral fellow at the Human Economy Programme of the University of Pretoria, South Africa. His project explores the Greek crisis as a total fact, in the anthropological sense, focusing specifically on social economy initiatives in Athens which mobilise on the premise of ‘solidarity’ discourses, in the distribution of food. Theodoros has written on legality (Re-public, 2011), food activism (Food Activism volume, eds Siniscalchi V and Counihan, C., Berg, 2013), and cooperatives (Human Economy II volume, eds Hart, K and Sharp, J., Berghahn, 2014).
