This article focuses on the short-term evolutions in the nights spent at tourist accommodation establishments in the European Union (EU). The data of the most recent reference month available are compared with the same month of the previous year. In addition and to smoothen fluctuations – data from January to the most recent available month of the current year are compared with the same period one year earlier.

Main statistical findings

In June 2014, compared with June 2013, 12.3 million more nights (+4.5 %) were spent at tourist accommodation establishments in the European Union (see Figure 1 and Table 1). This inrease was due to both non-residents (tourists travelling outside their country of residence) (+7.7 million nights, +5.9 %) and residents (+3.3 million nights, +3.3 %).

With the exception of Bulgaria, Lithuania, Romania, Slovakia, Finland and the United Kingdom, the positive growth was reflected in the national figures of most Members States where data is available.

In the segment of hotels and similar accommodation establishments an increase by 4.4 million nights (+2.5 %) was observed in June 2014 compared with June 2013.

Looking at the six months’ period from January to June 2014 an increase of 1.5 % was recorded in the number of nights spent at tourist accommodation establishments, compared with the same period one year earlier, while the segment of hotels and similar establishment recorded a growth of 2.2 % (see Table 2 and Figure 2).
